The ladies are celebrating their own obsolescence with the last day of operator assistance for all telephone calls. The next day would introduce direct dialing at the Summerville Telephone Company.
Some have speculated that the following image shows the construction of the telephone office in Summerville at the northwest corner of West Washington Street and Cox Street, circa 1958.
